Learn how aquatic macroinvertebrates (water insects and more) can help scientists determine water quality in an aquatic ecosystem. Search for dragonflies, mayflies, snails, leeches, scuds and more from Mohonk Preserve Pond samples. Sort and record the macroinvertebrates and use pollution tolerance indexes to determine water quality. Learn how to identify macroinvertebrates using a dichotomous key and field guides.

We will begin with an informational presentation introducing participants to the science of hydroponics and its importance in the future of sustainable agriculture. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and collaborate with peers to brainstorm about how technology like this could be integrated into science classrooms for hands-on, student-centered learning. Participants will then have the opportunity to take on a design challenge to create their very own passive hydroponic systems, with all supplies needed to grow their very own plants at home.
